Her outstanding contributions to society were further recognized when she was featured in the twenty-fifth-anniversary issue of Essence magazine as one of the 200 African American women who have changed the world. This honor reflects her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Belle and Felix Stickney Jr., Phyllis has always been a trailblazer. Growing up in a family that valued community engagement and service, Phyllis inherited a strong sense of purpose and a desire to effect meaningful change.

Her father's role as an executive with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) led the family to move frequently, exposing Phyllis to diverse communities and perspectives. With two siblings, including her brother Timothy, who is also an actor and director, the Stickney family nurtured a deep appreciation for the arts and the power of storytelling.

Phyllis's educational journey took her to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she honed her craft.
